It has been a while coming, but it seems Brother has decided that Raspberry Pi computers are popular enough that they should be supported ! It seems Raspberry Pi OS is also doing this now. My latest installations of my favourite Linux Distro on my main computer have all found my Brother Printers and made them available 'automatically'. The nice thing about this is that there was no Driver Installation needed. Then I chose the second option (via VNC) which suggests it might be printing through the main machine using that machine's connection. It worked, which suggests it was printing using the 'Driverless' ipp (Internet Printing Protocol). I chose the first option, which was just My printer's Name, and clicked Print. This time though, I opened a document, opened File > Print, selected my Brother Printer (it even listed one option as via VNC from Then I sent a Test page, and after a short wait (long enough that I almost sent it again) the printer started up and out popped a nice CUPS Test Page with a Debian logo.Īt the beginning of the year, I could get that far, but my Applications, like LibreOffice didn't show the printer, even after rebooting. Then I logged in to localhost:631 through the browser and used Administration > Add Printer and chose 'my' Brother model that said (driverless) in the description. So I installed CUPS, and made myself a user. I assumed I would have to mess around with it all again since the microSD card had been wiped and I no longer had the SSD I had used before. One of the first things I did when I got the 8GB Pi4 was install the latest RasPi OS, and get the VNC Server active so I could access it via a VNC Viewer from my main Linux Desktop machine.Ī couple of days ago I remembered I had some success sending a test page to my Wireless brother Printer at the beginning of the year. More recently I have been playing with connecting all my computers over VNC. Recently I bought the 8GB model, and set it up. There was a Beginners' thread on using the Pi with a Brother Printer, but things have changed.Įarly in the year I had a Pi4B 4Gig, which I gave away to someone.
